O.W. Gurley was a key figure in the creation of Tulsa’s Black Wall Street. A successful entrepreneur and philanthropist, Gurley purchased 40 acres of land in the Greenwood District in 1906, which he developed into a thriving, self-sufficient community for African Americans. He built the area’s first African American-owned hotel and encouraged Black professionals and business owners to settle in the district. Under his vision, Greenwood became a hub of economic prosperity, with businesses, schools, and cultural institutions flourishing. Despite the tragedy of the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre, Gurley’s legacy lives on as a symbol of Black economic empowerment and community resilience.
