About Black Wall St.

IMG_8487.jpg

The Greenwood District, also known as Black Wall Street, in Tulsa, OK was a striving neighborhood for African Americans. In the early 1900's, this area was filled with theaters, stores, barber shops, beauty salons, restaurants and much more,  This success led some to feel resentment towards this successful community. As a result, much of this tension led to the 1921 Tulsa Race Riot which destroyed many of the homes and businesses within the Tulsa African American Community and most of the Greenwood District.

After the 1921 Tulsa Race Riots, much of the community was rebuilt and many business where once again located along Greenwood Ave. However, much of this was destroy again by urban renewal when I-244 was put directly in the heart of the district in the 1960's and 1970's.

In contemporary times, the Greenwood Community has once again started to rebuild and bring light to the power of Black ownership and the resilience that they have as a community.
