The Historic Greenwood District in Tulsa, Oklahoma, once known as "Black Wall Street," was a thriving hub of African American commerce and culture in the early 20th century. Founded in the early 1900s, it became one of the most prosperous Black communities in the United States, home to Black-owned businesses, banks, hotels, and theaters. In 1921, the community was devastated by one of the worst racial violence incidents in U.S. history—the Tulsa Race Massacre—when white mobs destroyed much of the district. Today, Greenwood stands as a symbol of Black resilience and heritage, with ongoing efforts to preserve its legacy and promote healing.
