1921, Greenwood, a thriving African-American community in Tulsa, Oklahoma, was home to hundreds of successful black-owned businesses, including banks, hospitals, and stores. It was dubbed the "Black Wall Street" and was a symbol of African-American economic power and resilience in the face of segregation and discrimination. However, on May 31, 1921, a white mob, fueled by racial hatred and jealousy of black success, descended on Greenwood and terrorized its residents for 18 hours. They looted, burned, and destroyed nearly every black-owned business and home in the neighborhood, killing as many as 300 people and leaving thousands homeless. The survivors of the massacre, who rebuilt and sustained the community despite the odds, serve as a powerful example of black resilience and strength in the face of adversity. Our shirt pays tribute to their courage and perseverance, featuring the phrase "Black Wall Street: Rise Again" in bold letters.By wearing this shirt, we honor the legacy of those who came before us and recommit ourselves to building a better future for all. We acknowledge the pain and suffering of the past but choose to focus on the strength and resilience that allowed the community to rise again. May we continue to learn from the past and work towards a brighter future for all.
